How to Look Stylish in Summer: Using Accessories and Silk Scarves to Create Depth
Summer dressing can seem simple, but creating an interesting outfit in hot weather can actually be challenging. As a personal stylist in Montreal, one of my favourite ways to create a look is through layering. I love combining different textures, proportions, colours and unexpected elements. But during a hot and humid Montreal summer, traditional layering is not always practical.
This does not mean that a summer outfit has to feel flat or unfinished. When I cannot create depth with layers of clothing, I use accessories, colour, texture and proportion instead
In a way, accessories can become the layers of a summer outfit.

Use a Silk Scarf as a Colour Bridge
A silk scarf is one of my favourite styling tools because it can do much more than simply decorate an outfit.
I often use a printed scarf as a colour bridge. When an outfit contains several colours, the right scarf can connect them and make the entire combination feel intentional.
This is where I would place your first photograph: the blue blazer, lace and silk scarf.
In this look, the strong blue blazer is balanced by the softer lace and layered jewelry. The printed silk scarf brings together blue, brown, cream and touches of pink. Rather than matching everything exactly, the scarf creates a connection between the different colours and textures.
This is something I often look for when styling: not perfect matching, but visual conversation between the pieces.
Think Beyond Wearing a Scarf Around Your Neck
A silk scarf is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. It can be worn around the neck, in the hair, as a headscarf, around the waist, tied to a handbag or even transformed into a top.
Here I would place the second photograph: the bohemian look with the scarf worn as a top.
In this look, the scarf becomes the centre of the outfit rather than a finishing detail. Combined with the lace skirt, statement belt, jewelry, hat and jacket, it creates a relaxed bohemian feeling.
I love mixing pieces that have different personalities. Something delicate can be combined with something oversized. Lace can be worn with a masculine jacket. A polished silk scarf can be mixed with relaxed summer pieces.
For me, interesting personal style often comes from these contrasts.

Let Accessories Become Your Summer Layers
When the weather is too warm for jackets, sweaters and multiple layers, accessories can create the same feeling of depth.
Jewelry can add rhythm and movement. A belt can change the proportions of an outfit. A scarf can introduce colour close to the face. A strong bag or an unexpected shoe can completely change the mood of simple clothing.
The important thing is not to add accessories randomly. Each element should contribute something: colour, texture, proportion, contrast or personality.
Here I would place the third photograph: the white summer look with the headscarf and metallic bag.
This look is built around a light, almost monochromatic base, but it does not feel flat. The headscarf, metallic bag, jewelry, brown belt and transparent outer layer create different points of interest while keeping the outfit suitable for warm weather.
Create Depth Through Texture
When you cannot layer many garments, fabric becomes even more important.
Silk, linen, cotton, lace, crochet and transparent fabrics all interact with light differently. Combining them can create depth without adding physical heaviness.
A simple outfit made from several interesting textures can often feel richer than a complicated outfit made from similar fabrics.
I particularly love the contrast between delicate and structured materials: lace with tailoring, silk with denim, transparent fabrics with leather, or soft flowing pieces with something architectural and strong.
These combinations give an outfit character.
Play With Proportion
Accessories are not the only way to make summer dressing more interesting. Proportion can transform even a limited number of pieces.
An oversized shirt with short shorts, wide trousers with a small fitted top, or a structured blazer over something delicate can create visual tension.
I don’t believe that every element of an outfit needs to have the same mood. Sometimes the unexpected combination is what makes the look feel personal.
Personal Style Is About Connection
For me, styling is not about following a formula or adding more things to an outfit. It is about understanding the relationship between colour, texture, silhouette and the person wearing the clothes.
Sometimes one silk scarf can connect an entire outfit. Sometimes changing a belt or adding jewelry changes the proportions. Sometimes the most important styling decision is removing something.
Summer dressing may give us fewer opportunities for traditional layering, but it gives us other possibilities. Accessories, scarves, texture, colour and proportion can create just as much depth and individuality—without making an outfit feel heavy.
